Groom's Cakes!

Most of us probably remember the scene in Steel Magnolias when all of the women are in Truvy's beauty shop discussing the groom's cake, a red velvet cake with gray icing in the shape of an armadillo. In the Northern US States, not too many people heard of a groom's cake before Shelby's wedding, but in the Southern States, it's a long standing tradition to have a groom's cake at the wedding.

According to
Love to Know Weddings, The Groom's Cake tradition began originally as a dark fruitcake that was packaged in individual boxes and given as gifts. Wedding favors have taken this honored place in the wedding, and the grooms cake has evolved into a tradition for brides everywhere. Not all weddings have a groom's cake at their wedding, so it is completely up to you . . .

Below is a picture of such a cute "Tennessee Football Groom's Cookie Cake" at a recent wedding. The bride surprised the groom with a table that had his favorite Tennessee football memorabilia, pictures of the two of them at a game and of course his favorite chocolate chip cookie decorated cake. Such a great and personal touch that really represented the groom. . .
What to Display on Groom's Cake Table: The groom's table is a place to display the groom's interests, hobbies, and/or personality. It's the one spot in the room where all minds will definitely go to the groom rather than the bride. Here are some ideas of things to put on the table:
  • Obviously a "Cake" or dessert of some kind - decorated according to his life, personality or interests (Something other than the white wedding cake served for your big day - you can do anything from cheesecake, cupcakes, dark chocolate, cookie cakes, his favorite dessert, etc)

  • Decorations—toys, gadgets, sports items, Transformer robots…whatever he likes!

  • Pictures of the groom

Choosing a Theme: The groom is definitely a three-dimensional, well-rounded character with plenty of interests. That could be too broad for the wedding planner, bride or groom to express in the few square feet a table will offer, so it's wise to choose a theme and branch out from there. Here are a few popular themes: Hunting, favorite foods (i.e. a cheeseburger cake, a "pizza" cake, etc.), sports, sports teams, colleges or universities, computers, tools, cars, work, video games, hobbies, interests, etc.

You can make the Groom's cake yourself or order from the baker that is creating your wedding cake. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to grooms' cakes, so you can choose whatever flavors will delight your groom's palate. Make a unique statement for your wedding day and give the guests something extra to talk about! Have fun with it! xxoo, Kristin
